St. Louis African American History & Genealogy Series: Evaluating and Incorporating Family Stories, Legends, and Lore

Folklore, stories, and legends tinge family histories with aspects fo adventure, drama, and heroics. These stories get passed down through generations until there is no person living who can verify them. Often they become part of a set of beliefs that interferes with research, creating brick walls and frustration. Some of these stories border on the fanciful. Others strain the credulity of all but the teller, who, despite any objective evidence, swears by his or her version of it. The St. Louis African American History and Genealogy Society presents this two-part series of participatory workshops to explore how best to evaluate and use the information in our family stories.

Presented in collaboration with the St. Louis African American History & Genealogy Society.
