In Search of Osage Indian Hunting Camp
brochure: in search of an osage indian hunting camp

From 1818 to 1819, Henry Rowe Schoolcraft made a journey through the Ozarks in search of lead deposits. Midway through his journey, Schoolcraft encountered three abandoned Osage Indian hunting camps in the valley of Swan Creek in Christian County. In 2016 the Missouri State University (MSU) archaeology field school tested a site on Swan Creek to determine whether it might be one of the three hunting camps that Schoolcraft noted. Jack H. Ray, assistant director of the Center for Archaeological Research and assistant research professor at MSU, will present the results of the investigation.

Presented in collaboration with the Mound City Chapter of the Missouri Archaeological Society.
