After an accident at the age of 12 that resulted in his leg being amputated below the knee, St. Louisan Lorenz Kersting had to find a way to adapt to this drastic change. By age 19 he had stopped growing and could be fitted with a prosthetic leg. This leg, made by Hanger Company in St. Louis, replaced his first one, which lasted 20 years.
