St. Louis Arc was founded in 1952 as the St. Louis Association for Retarded Children by the mothers of children with developmental disabilities. Fundraisers brought in money that was used to advocate for the rights of children with developmental disabilities and to establish programs for the children. The Knights of Columbus actively fundraised for the Arc. The wording of campaigns has changed, with the word "retarded" now outdated and discouraged.
