The Phonac model C hearing device manufactured by French Electric Company in New York resembles a camera. The front grate is made to look like a camera lens, and the volume controls and batteries sit inside the device. Sold for about $60, the device worked when a receiver was plugged into it, amplifying the sound for the user. This is one of many hearing devices that allowed the user to conceal his or her disability.
